Sweets, candy and fruit, three mobile games read at a glance

CruxGlance is a one-person editorial desk that follows small confectionery-themed games on the Canadian Google Play storefront. Each entry below is written from the listing and from time spent with the game: what it asks of your hands, how long a sitting lasts, and what the Canadian price tag actually covers.

Three games, numbered by how much they ask of you

The order is not a ranking of quality. It runs from the game you can understand in a single gesture to the one that repays a few evenings of pattern reading. Store category, rating, review count and price are copied from the Canadian storefront on the date given above.

01

Fruit Ninja Classic+

The arcade that taught a generation what a touchscreen swipe feels like. Whole fruit is thrown up from the bottom of the screen and one drawn line cuts it into halves; the Classic+ edition drops the front-end of the free version and hands you Classic, Arcade and Zen from the first tap.

It is the shortest commitment on this page — a run lasts about as long as a kettle takes — and the only entry here where your hand rather than your planning is being tested. Progress is measured in personal bests, so the game is finished whenever you decide it is.

02

Candy Blast: Offline Game

A match-three board built for the moments when there is no signal, and the title is a promise the game keeps. The pieces are wrapped sweets, jellies and chocolate squares, and the moves worth making are the ones that leave a striped or wrapped piece behind rather than the ones that simply clear three in a row.

No public score is attached to the listing yet, which is the ordinary state of a small paid release. It earns its place here because the board stays legible at arm's length and because a one-time purchase that plays through without interruption is rarer than it sounds.

03

Sweet Fruit Candy

The free entry, and by some distance the most played: 637K reviews behind a 4.5 average put it in the busiest corner of the category. Levels are counted in moves rather than seconds, so the pressure is arithmetic — read what a swap opens up two rows down before you commit to it.

Google Play lists the title as containing ads, which is the trade behind the free tag; once a level has loaded, the board itself keeps working without a connection. The fruit set is unusually clear, which matters on a small screen.

Where the price is charged

All three listings live on Google Play. A one-time purchase in the store is completed inside your own Google account under Google's rules, and refunds are handled by Google Play in the same place. CruxGlance sells nothing, keeps no store of its own, takes no commission on anything you install and never sees your card details.

If a figure on this page differs from the one on your screen, the storefront is right and this page is behind — write to the address at the foot of the page and it will be corrected.

Side by side

What each one asks for

Six columns, all of them about the experience rather than the marketing copy. Session lengths were timed on an ordinary mid-range Android phone, not quoted from the listings.

Comparison of the three sweets-and-fruit games covered by CruxGlance, as listed on Google Play in Canada.
Title Store category Pace Typical sitting Learning curve Plays without a connection Price on Google Play
Fruit Ninja Classic+ Action Fast, led by reflex About a minute per run None — one gesture and you are playing Yes, every mode is single-player C$4.29
Candy Blast: Offline Game Casual Steady, one board at a time Four to six minutes per board Gentle; the wrapped-piece rules land after a few boards Yes, and the listing says so in the title C$4.09
Sweet Fruit Candy Puzzle Deliberate, counted in moves Two to four minutes per level Immediate for anyone who has played match-three Yes once a level has loaded; ad breaks need a connection Free

The two paid entries sit twenty cents apart, so choosing between them is a question of tempo rather than of price: the arcade is ahead on pace, the casual board is ahead on quiet. The free puzzle has the longest ladder of levels and the busiest review page, and it is the only one of the three that interrupts itself.
